Empty your browser cache
When you surf the Internet your browser downloads html, sounds, images and other files from web servers and displays them to you. These files are stored on your hard drive and can represent a security/privacy gap in your system.
All the Web sites you visit are stored in part in a folder on your hard drive called a "cache". Although your browser will automatically empty itself when it starts getting too full, performing the task manually can help your computer to run faster by freeing up some space. Apart from that, it's a good way to prevent curious people from checking where you've been.
Here is how to do it:
Internet Explorer Users
- Load your Internet Explorer browser by clicking on
or
on your Desktop
- Click on Tools in the top menu
- Select Internet Options. The Options box will pop up
- Click on the General tab In the Temporary Internet Files section
- Click Delete Files
- Click OK - you're done!
Netscape Navigator and Communicator Users
- Load Netscape Navigator browser by clicking on
or
on your Desktop
- Click the second item in the menu at the top: Edit
- Select Preferences. The Netscape Preferences box will pop up.
- Click on the + symbol next to Advanced, to extend the menu
- Click on Cache, then click both 'Clear memory cache' and 'Clear disk cache'
- Click OK - you're done!
You - like those who want to spy where you've been - can look inside your cache folder to see what's been downloaded. Here is how to do it:
Changing Cache Settings in Mozilla Firefox
Firefox stores copies of frequently accessed pages in the cache. By doing this Firefox doesn't have to retrieve the page from the network each time you view the web page.
To set the size of the cache or to clear it:
- Select Tools > Options Edit > Preferences Firefox > Preferences.
- Under the Privacy category, click Cache to expand the list.
- Enter a number in the Use up to field to specify the size of the cache. 50MB to 70MB is a good size. To clear the cache immediately, click the Clear button to the right of the Cache category.
Important: A larger cache allows more data to be quickly retrieved, but more of your hard disk space is used.
When you quit Firefox, it performs cache maintenance. If maintenance takes longer than you wish, try reducing the size of the disk cache.
To reload a page at any time:
- Click the Reload button in Firefox's Navigation Toolbar. The computer checks the Internet to make sure you have the latest version of the page.
