Firewalls are a security system consisting of a combination of hardware and software that limits the exposure of a computer or computer network to attack from crackers; commonly used on local area networks that are connected to the internet. The secret to limiting hackers hacking into your computer is to go into a stealth mode. Firewalls provide that stealth mode. Software firewalls are usually plenty of protection for the home computer. If you have a business or on a network, then I would suggest using a hardware firewall as well. A good router will accomplish a perfect hardware firewall. Here again you can spend money for firewalls or download a free one from the internet. Windows XP comes with a built in firewall. However it is better to turn it off and use a third party firewall. Don’t try to use both.
Zone Alarm is one of the best firewalls available. It has a free version that is award winning. It out does firewalls that cost several hundred dollars. They also have a version that you can pay for.
